Representatives of Fish Futures were invited to the Crystal Springs Hutterite Colony near Niverville, MB on March 14th to award prizes to their talented young artists.
Our host was Victor Kleinsasser, who teaches at the local school that serves about 50 children in their community. We met Victor last year, when his daughter Greta received 1st place in the YAC 2014 contest. This year, his daughter Liyah received 1st place in the Early Years Division for her picture Awesome Lake Trout. She sure was happy with her prizes and $300 cash. Not bad for a ten year old!
Kelly Boller was awarded 3rd place and Emily Evans was the lucky draw winner in the Early Years Division. Copies of the books Hope and the Walleye and Catch that Catfish! were given to the many other children in the community who entered their artwork. The members of the colony make regular trips to Lake Winnipeg to ice fish, and at the banquet one of their leaders remarked that perhaps these trips may become more frequent now given the interest in fishing expressed by the children in the community.
Will we return again to Crystal Springs in 2016 to award more cash and prizes? Given how delicious of lunch we were served, we sure hope so! We will also make sure this year that all Hutterite colonies in Manitoba receive information about the contest and are encouraged to take up the challenge of drawing a lake sturgeon.
