Art – The Universal Language
The visit on October 13th to Windsor Park Collegiate was a first for the Youth Angling Card program. Ms. Robins’ and Ms. Stangherlin’s class of Grade 9 students are learning English as a Second Language. This was an incredibly diverse group, and this particular class was in social studies and Canadian History.
With an audience that speaks 15+ different languages, this presentation relied more on exaggerated gestures, key words, and simple drawings. Some students were surprised that you could fish in freshwater, as their previous experience involved oceans. The content of the presentation was certainly limited by the presenter’s artistic abilities, but everybody had a good laugh at the caveman drawings that were left on the whiteboard. There was a good amount of time to circulate throughout the class and talk individually with students about their drawings and experiences.
